O.K. Clutter has been overtaking your life long enough, and you have determined to end its grip. Your problem is that it has become so overwhelming that you don't know how to tackle it. No problem there are superheroes for that- professional organizers! Yes, that is a thing, and they do not come in to clean or organize your stuff while you go to the spa or play golf. They come in as someone with a different perspective, training and years of experience in organizing, decluttering and helping us ordinary folk to escape the overwhelming grip of chaos. Maybe itís not chaos, but you still want to get it taken care of, and you need a little help. Whether it is junky hard drives, an overflowing attic, an office where you can't find the papers you need when you need them, hoarding or seniors with a house that they have lived in for decades. Professional organizers bring different things to the table to help succeed with whatever your goal is. 

Theyíve seen it all 

If you are concerned that an organizer will judge you based on what they see when they come in, don't be they have seen it all. They are professional so you can expect a nonjudgmental, respectful time to conquer your tasks. They will still tell you what you need to hear, and that might be tough, but it will be done to support your goals in hiring them. No need to be embarrassed about what they see there either. The career that they are in means they have probably seen far worse.

There are some questions to ask when hiring an organizer: 
- Have they been trained
- What kind of approach do they take (how hands-on are they)
- What method do they follow (no joy throw it out?)What is their charge and what, if any, deposit do they require
- Do they have references, pictures
- What is their policy for small spaces like a closet or pantry
- Do they give initial consultations

Now that you know that you can have help-go for it

You never know but that you will find treasure under all that clutter (uncashed checks anyone) so go treasure hunt and free up all that time and mental space and enjoy that feeling of accomplishment.

After a move, everything feels fresh and energizing. This is, of course, in part because of the energy that comes with a big change. But it also comes from having a neatly, organized home. In the jumble of packing and unpacking, junk gets tossed and items get new homes. Everything gets a new dedicated area where it belongs. Everything is tidy, as it should be.

So how then can you maintain this wonderful feeling and continue to keep things neat and tidy?

First, you need to make a daily habit of doing a quick clean sweep every day. Whether you do it in the morning, afternoon or before bed isnít important. What is important is that you do it every day.

Go through the house to make to corral up stray dishes, put items back into their dedicated places, and give homes to those who donít have one yet.

And if you canít think of somewhere to put it? Question its purpose and consider either donating or tossing it.

Aim to keep your surfaces clear of items. Allowing things to accumulate is one of the fastest for clutter to quickly take over. Stop it in its track by tidying up when youíre done using this ďstationĒ of your home.

Practice not being ďlazyĒ. If you bring your tea to sip on the couch when you leave the room take your mug with you straight to the dishwasher. If you finished the last of the chips put the clip away where it belongs instead of leaving it out on the counter. Put pens back away after using them to jot out notes. Recycle magazines when you're done reading them.

If you find things are building up as clutter quickly you might have too much stuff. Which is okay, it happens!

Decluttering isnít a one and done process. We need to consistently be assessing the things that collect in our homes and what benefit they are adding to your life. Sometimes we once used all the time have fallen out of favor or need to be repaired/replaced.

Make time once a month for a quick declutter session and once a season for a more detailed one.

And the best way to avoid clutter is to closely monitor what youíre allowing to come into your home in the first place. If you find you love to take things home just because they were free or on sale, itís important to take a step back and ask yourself why.

After all, the less stuff we have in our homes the less there is to manage. Which means more time spent doing what you enjoy doing, like spending time with your family, and less time organizing it all.

Although some families are more organized than others, most homes are plagued by at least a moderate amount of clutter.

Here are a few favorite tips for making the most of your closet: Donate, Sell or Toss: First and foremost, go through everything in your closet. A good rule to live by is to get rid of anything you havenít worn in the last year (unless itís a specialty item such as a dress for a wedding). We tend to hold onto things that we hope one day will fit again or will come back into style but those are not wise ways to think when you are trying to optimize space in your closet. From there it is up to you what to donate, sell or toss. Organize: Next is to organize. Make piles of whatís left based on clothing type and then organize by color. This will make your life so much easier when it comes to looking for clothes. Youíll know exactly where each type of clothing is if you put them all together and if you categorize by color youíll always be able to find what youíre looking for. Systems & Layout: If your current layout isnít working for you then maybe itís time to reassess and purchase a new closet system. Simple systems can be found at many retailers such as Wal-Mart and Home Depot. If you are looking for more intricate pieces and systems that arenít too costly then your best bet is IKEA. Consider adding a wardrobe or additional closet to your space if everything wonít fit in your current closet.
